When I decided I wanted to move on to a smaller breed of dog from the Belgian Sheepdogs and Belgian Tervurens that I had bred for years, I looked for a long time at all the toy breeds registered with the AKC. Although many of the toy breeds lived happily with big dogs I did not feel comforable bringing one of these little guys in with my big rambunctious crew.
I had judged the Havanese breed at Rare Breed shows and had found them a sturdy, delightful, little dog. After much discussion with Havanese breeders at the various Rare Breed shows (as of 1/1/1999-Havanese are recognized and registered by the AKC), I was told that it was thought at one time Havanese were used to herd chickens in their native home of Cuba. Since I have always had a great love for the herding breeds I knew I had found the toy breed for me.
After much searching and some false starts I found Sugar's breeder Lynn Nieto of Los Perrito Kennel and from there Sugar came to live with me.
